Advantages of Laser Micromachining

Advantages of Laser Micromachining

Potomac Photonics utilizes a broad range of micromanufacturing technologies including laser systems.  Lasers are great tool for fabricating extremely precise features quickly and repeatably.  In addition to the laser source, most micromachining systems are configured with highly accurate optics and motion control systems.

Some of the critical advantages of laser micromachining include:

  • Systems are highly flexible and can be configured to cut, drill, weld, engrave and deposit materials.
  • Contactless machining with no tool wear and load bearing.
  • Ability to machine almost any material including metals, polymers, glass, ceramics and silicon wafers.
  • Capability to achieve features as small as 1 micron with submicron tolerances.
  • Very sharp features with minimal or no burrs, material build-up  or Heat Affected Zone (HAZ).
  • Cost-effective for both small and large volume applications.
